We believe that for things to be Flawless they should be made using the same amount of pleasure as you experience actually using the object.
Behind our products you will find a bunch of people who feel passionately about their skills and what they produce for us. In essence, many of the items on Flawless are designed and created by individuals from around Europe who work in offices, schools and supermarkets, who in their spare time, enjoy nothing more than sewing or knitting.
The concept for Flawless came from our love of Japanese culture and the teachings of “wabi sabi”. Mette Mitchell, Founder of Flawless explains, “I was very much interested in Japan” and it was after speaking with a friend in 2003 on a trip to Japan that the foundations for Flawless and Mette’s appreciation of wabi sabi were cemented. “I asked a friend of mine to explain it and she rolled her eyes and did her best to try to explain. She explained it as follows, when you have a room for a tea ceremony you have a tatami mat, a low table, some small shelves on the walls with decorative items balanced on them and then you will have a Japanese painting - that’s the basic order of a tea room. If you then take away the painting then wabi sabi comes into discussion as when the painting is missing, the viewer would have to use their own imagination to conceive that painting.”
In short, Leonard Koren best described wabi sabi as the "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete" in his book Wabi-Sabi: for Artists, Designers, Poets and Philosophers. Nature never has just one pattern; it will be ever changing and always unique and this is what we apply to all of the products at Flawless.
Wabi sabi can never be achieved in a factory, where standards for what is seen as “perfection” are narrow. The true wabi sabi items demand a handmade aesthetic. Each item will be naturally different from the one made before it and the one made after. The flawed become flawless – beautiful, inspiring and perfect in its own right.
All of the products on flawlessonline.co.uk are handmade and therefore each product will differ from the other. Each product is a part of the person who has made it. The materials they used, the music they were listening to, the tea they were drinking and the sheer joy they experienced while making the item for you.
At Flawlessonline.co.uk we don’t have to work too hard at reducing our carbon footprint, as it's a natural part of the Flawless culture. We do not have any factories in far away countries or long distribution routes. Most of the items come from Denmark and the United Kingdom and none of the products make detours to other countries for packaging, labelling or other processes. In some cases you will find items that are made out of reused materials or scraps, which have been discharged from larger manufacturers. On flawlessonline.co.uk you will also find a selection of second-hand items that have been carefully sourced from markets everywhere.
